The Welcome Casserole

By the time I reach the first stoplight in Cardinal, I have said "pelvic floor" sixteen times in a musical theater voice and a man in a grain truck is looking down into my Subaru like I have personally offended soybeans. This is a professional development issue. In my defense, I have been in Indianapolis for two days at the Midwest Association for Sex and Couples Therapy conference, where a woman from Ohio gave an entire keynote on desire discrepancy while wearing earrings shaped like tiny pears. Also, "pelvic floor" fits surprisingly well into the chorus of "Jolene." The grain truck idles beside me at the red light. The driver is Mr. Tuttle, who buys lemon bars every Wednesday from Brenner's and once asked me at the IGA if my practice "does the weird stuff." I told him all bodies are weird in private. He has avoided aisle four ever since. The light turns green. Cardinal, Indiana appears around me in its usual order: Frosty Boy, Dairy Queen, both pretending they are not locked in a decades-long frozen-dessert cold war, the Cardinal High sign still bragging about 1987 boys basketball, then the courthouse square. My office sits between Whitlock's Hardware and Mulligan's Petal Pusher, in a limestone storefront with black trim, lace curtains I bought from an Etsy seller in Terre Haute, and a front-window decal that says: BEECHAM & CO. INTIMACY COUNSELING Couples. Individuals. Repair. The word "intimacy" has caused more civic unrest in Cardinal than the time Dairy Queen put up a sign that said WE HAVE REAL ICE CREAM. I pull into my usual parking space behind the building, gather my conference tote, my rolling suitcase, and the leftover turkey sandwich I forgot to eat somewhere near Plainfield. My back makes a noise when I stand up. I come around the corner toward Main Street and stop. There is a cream-colored notice taped to my office door with blue painter's tape, which is how people tell you they have chosen civility over violence. I know the font. I know the little cardinal printed in the top left corner, wearing a pilgrim hat for reasons no one in the Historical Preservation Society has ever successfully defended. NOTICE OF HISTORIC DISTRICT CONCERN Section 4.B: Window Display Decorum I stand on the sidewalk with my turkey sandwich going warm in my tote and read the complaint twice. Apparently, my current window display is "inconsistent with the family character of Cardinal's Heritage Main Street." My current window display is a small bowl of wrapped mints, three business cards, a fern named Gordon, and a pamphlet titled When Sex Hurts. Gordon is leaning to the left, but I do not believe he is sexually suggestive. I peel the notice from the glass. I unlock the office, shove my suitcase into the vestibule, and look at the pamphlet through the front window from the sidewalk. It is cream with green lettering, no illustrations, and oppressively calm. "You are a medical resource," I tell the pamphlet. A woman walking a schnauzer on the opposite side of the street slows down. "Good afternoon, Mrs. Hollis," I call. Mrs. Hollis tightens her leash and walks faster. I take the notice, my tote, and my rapidly declining turkey sandwich and march two doors down to Brenner's. Brenner's smells like butter, coffee, and the part of childhood before anyone explained property taxes. Audrey Brenner stands behind the counter in a black T-shirt, flour on one cheek, a pastry bag in her hand, and the dead-eyed expression of a woman who has already been asked whether her gluten-free cupcakes are "actually good" seven times today. Pretzel, her German shepherd, is asleep beside the register with his nose on his paws and a powdered-sugar footprint on his ear. "No," Audrey says when she sees my face. "You don't know what I'm going to say." "You have Historical Society eyebrows." I put the notice on the counter. Audrey reads it without moving her head. Only her eyes track the page. "Section 4.B can bite my entire ass." "Audrey." "Fine. Section 4.B can bite my professionally laminated ass." I look toward the only occupied table. Maggie Mulligan sits there with a bucket of cut dahlias between her knees, floral tape stuck to her forearm, and an iced coffee so large it has structural ambitions. Her dark hair is coming out of a clip in seven directions. There is soil on her chin. This means she has either been working or parenting. With Maggie, the distinction is often philosophical. "What happened?" she asks. "Bunny happened." Maggie winces. "Which cardigan?" "The notice was delivered by paper, so I don't know." "Bad sign," Audrey says. "Paper Bunny is worse than verbal Bunny." I slide into the chair across from Maggie and pull the pamphlet from my tote. "This is the offending material." Maggie takes it, reads the title, and nods thoughtfully. "This would have saved my first marriage approximately four arguments and one throw pillow." "Your first marriage ended because Dale left you with three children and a minivan." "Yes, but the throw pillow was an early symptom." Audrey leans both elbows on the counter. "You know this isn't really about the pamphlet, right?" "I assume it is about Bunny's ongoing belief that human reproductive systems were invented by Democrats." "It's about the rumor." I blink. There is a small, unpleasant pause in my body. "What rumor?" Maggie and Audrey look at each other. I do not enjoy that. Audrey comes around the counter and sits in the chair beside me. Pretzel opens one eye. "A freshman at Cardinal High told people your office is a brothel." I stare at her. The espresso machine hisses. A timer beeps in the back. Someone on the sidewalk laughs at something that is not legally allowed to be funny while I am processing slander. "That is inaccurate," I say. "Yes, Hol." "A brothel implies the provision of sexual services in exchange for payment." "That is also what I said," Maggie says. "But with more swearing." "I take insurance." Audrey points at me. "That part I did not say." The bell over the bakery door jingles. Three women from the Methodist choir come in, see me, and stop so abruptly they bump into each other. "Afternoon," Audrey says. "Afternoon," Mrs. Packer says, looking at my hands as if I might be holding immoral coupons. One of the other women whispers, "That's her." Audrey's chair legs scrape back. I catch her wrist. "No." "I was just standing." "You were standing in a felony direction." She sits down again. The choir women buy six cinnamon rolls and leave in a cluster dense enough to affect traffic. "Who is the freshman?" Maggie picks floral tape off her arm hair. "New kid. Eli Garrett. Lives on Maple Street. His dad bought the Murphy place after the pipes exploded and Mrs. Murphy moved to Florida to be near her sister and apparently humidity with intent." "Eli Garrett," I repeat. "Fourteen," Audrey says. "Dark hair. Looks like if a hoodie learned grief." "Audrey." "What? I'm observant." Maggie stabs a dahlia stem into the bucket. "Sarah says he barely talks, except last week at lunch when somebody asked what your office was and he said underage brothel." My mouth opens. Nothing comes out. This is rare enough that both of my friends notice. "Hey," she says. "I am thinking." "No, you're doing the thing where your face turns into a filing cabinet." "It is not unreasonable for adolescents to test boundaries with sexualized humor when they feel socially unsafe." Maggie points at me with a dahlia. "There she is." "However," I continue, "it is also not ideal for a fourteen-year-old to identify my office as a site of commercial sexual exploitation." "There she still is," Audrey says. "Do you want us to do anything?" Maggie asks. "No." "Do you want a cookie shaped like Section 4.B?" She lifts one shoulder. "I've done worse with royal icing." I fold the notice into quarters. Then eighths. Then sixteenths, which is excessive but gives my fingers a task. "I am going to call Principal Henke in the morning." "Good," Maggie says. "I am going to ask for context." "Fine." "I am going to handle this with calm, proportionate professionalism." Audrey reaches across the table and pats my hand. "Baby, you just folded a civic complaint into a hate nugget." I look down. She is correct. I go home at six because I have four client notes to finish, a suitcase full of wrinkled conference clothes, and a fern whose moral character has been questioned by a woman who once tried to ban plastic Easter eggs from the courthouse lawn because "resurrection should not be neon." My house is a little white bungalow three blocks from the square, with a porch swing my father installed after my mother died and a hydrangea that has been emotionally inconsistent for five years. I park in the driveway and see the casserole before I reach the steps. It sits on my porch in a glass baking dish with a blue lid and a note tucked under the handle. Marlene Schaefer has the penmanship of a nun and the emotional intelligence of an informant. I am so sorry, honey. That is all. No name. No context. No instructions for reheating. I stand on my porch while the evening bugs start up and my neighbor's sprinkler ticks across a lawn that is mostly crabgrass and confidence. In Cardinal, a casserole means one of three things. Birth, death, or scandal. This is tater tot hotdish. Scandal, then. I carry it inside. The next morning, Principal Carol Henke calls at 7:42, which is either very efficient or a violation of the Geneva Conventions. "Holly," she says. "Good morning, Carol." "I need to have a professional courtesy meeting." I am brushing my teeth. I remove the toothbrush from my mouth. "Those words have never preceded anything comfortable." "No." "Is this about Eli Garrett?" There is a pause. "I see the bakery works faster than email." "The bakery has yeast and trauma." Carol exhales through her nose. "Can you come by at ten?" "Yes." "Please bring whatever professional explanation you think would be least likely to make a freshman boy combust." "That is a narrow category." Cardinal High smells exactly the same as it did when I was seventeen: floor wax, cafeteria pizza, gym socks, and ambition trapped in cinder block. The trophy case still holds the 1987 runner-up basketball trophy under a little spotlight, as if the team might come back for it any minute. I sign in at the office. The secretary, Mrs. Nance, slides me a visitor sticker without making eye contact. I put the sticker on my cardigan and follow Carol Henke's voice down the hall. Her office door is open. Eli Garrett sits in the chair nearest the bookshelf, folded into a black hoodie, black jeans, and black high-tops. His hair falls into his eyes. His hands are hidden in his sleeves. Carol sits behind her desk in a navy blazer and reading glasses, a stack of discipline forms to her left and a mug that says ASK ME ABOUT STANDARDIZED TESTING in a tone no mug should have. "Holly," she says. "Thank you." "Of course." Eli looks at me once, then looks at the carpet like the carpet has offered asylum. I sit in the other chair. No one speaks. "Eli," Carol says, "Dr. Beecham is here because your comment in the cafeteria has created a situation." Eli's shoulders rise half an inch. "I didn't mean it like that." His voice is low and rough from either puberty or shame. "I believe you," I say. That makes him glance at me again. "However," I add, "words have anatomy." Carol closes her eyes. I continue because I am already in it. "You can intend them as one thing and have them function as another. Brothel, for example, is not a synonym for therapy practice. It describes a very specific commercial context involving sexual services." Eli's eyes go wide. Carol's pen stops moving. I turn. A man stands in the doorway with one hand on the frame and a takeout coffee in the other. He is tall, dark-haired, and wearing a charcoal coat over a white shirt with the top button undone. Not fashionably undone. Unhappily undone. As if the button had resigned under pressure. His face is the exact expression of a person arriving one sentence too late to a fire. "I'm sorry," he says. His eyes move from Carol to Eli to me and then to my visitor sticker. "Sam Garrett," Carol says. "Come in." Sam Garrett steps into the office. Eli sinks lower in the chair. "Dad." "Bud." There is a whole divorce in that one syllable. The carefulness. The way Sam sets his coffee on Carol's desk instead of holding it, like he does not trust his hand to have something breakable in it. He turns to me. "Dr. Beecham, I am so sorry." "Please don't apologize yet. I may not have finished making it worse." His mouth twitches, small enough to almost not be there. But it is the first reaction in twenty-four hours that does not make me feel like a pamphlet someone has hidden under a magazine. Carol gestures to the chair beside Eli. Sam sits. He does not touch his son, but his knee angles toward him. Eli notices. I notice Eli noticing. I put both hands on my knees. "Eli, I want to be clear. You are not in trouble with me." "I'm in trouble with everyone else," he mutters. "That does sound crowded." Sam looks at the coffee cooling on Carol's desk. "You used a word that made people feel alarmed," I say. "People often respond to alarm by adding their own seasoning." Eli frowns. "What?" "Rumors are casseroles." Sam looks at me. This was not in my training. "Someone brings one ingredient," I say, because apparently I am committed. "Someone else adds cream soup. By the end, everyone has a hot dish and indigestion." Eli stares. Carol presses her lips together. Sam covers his mouth with two fingers. I decide not to identify that as a laugh. We do not have consent from the moment. "My point," I say, "is that I understand you may have been trying to make people laugh. Or trying to get people to leave you alone. Or both. But the word you chose put my business in danger and made other students repeat something untrue." Eli's face goes red in patches. "I said I didn't mean it." "I know." "Then why are we still talking about it?" Sam's hand closes around his own knee. Before he can speak, I lean forward. "Because meaning it is not the only way to hurt something." The office goes quiet. Eli looks at me then. Really looks. Fourteen is an awful age. The body becomes a landlord with new rules every morning. Everyone expects you to stop being a child before anyone agrees you are a person. I would not do fourteen again for federal student loan forgiveness. Eli swallows. "I'm sorry," he says. It is not loud. It is also not nothing. "Thank you," I say. Sam looks at his son. His face does not soften. It steadies, which might be harder. Carol reaches for a folder. "Here is where I make this worse administratively." "I was afraid of that," Sam says. His voice is dry and low. I should not notice that. I notice that. Carol opens the folder. "The rumor has spread enough that we need to address it before it becomes the thing everyone is whispering over lunch trays. Holly, I would like you to come speak to the freshman health classes." "About my office?" "About adolescent sexual development, rumors, consent, digital responsibility, and whatever language you use that makes parents calm down." "Parents rarely calm down because of my language." "Then use smaller words." Eli makes a strangled sound. Sam turns his head toward him. "Are you laughing?" "No." "You are." "I'm having a respiratory event." I fold my hands in my lap. "I can do an age-appropriate talk." Sam looks at me quickly. "You don't have to clean up my kid's mess." There it is. The honest thing. Not polished. Not defensive. A father with coffee going cold and a son trying to vanish into cotton, asking for one less consequence to land on someone else's porch. My prepared sentences step back. "I know," I say. Eli looks at the floor. Sam nods once, but it does not look like agreement. It looks like a man putting weight on a board he is not sure will hold. Carol clears her throat. "Good. I will coordinate with the health teachers. Sam, Eli will serve two lunch detentions and write a written apology." Eli groans. "Handwritten," Carol says. He groans harder. "Cursive if you make that sound again." He stops. I stand, because if I stay any longer I may say something compassionate and ruin my professional boundaries in front of a minor, a principal, and a man whose shirt button has become a civic issue in my mind. Sam stands too. "Dr. Beecham," he says. "Holly is fine." That comes out before I approve it. Sam pauses. It is a half-second adjustment, like he had been handed something breakable and decided how to hold it. "Holly," he says. "Thank you." My name sounds different in his mouth. This is also not clinically useful. "You're welcome." He reaches into his coat pocket, stops, and gives a small helpless laugh. "I was going to offer you my card, which makes no sense. You already know where I live because my son has launched a municipal incident." "Maple Street," I say. His eyebrows lift. "Small town," I add. "Right." He glances at Eli, then back at me. "Could I have yours? In case I need to ask how to not make this worse." "That is not officially one of my services." I hand him a Beecham & Co. card from the little case in my bag. His fingers brush mine for less than a second. Nothing happens. Except my pulse, which is supposed to be on my side. He reads the card. Not skims it. Reads it. Then he puts it carefully into his wallet. That is rude. I leave Cardinal High through the front entrance and pass under the 1987 runner-up banner. At four-thirty, I move When Sex Hurts behind Gordon and tape the Historical Society notice inside a file folder labeled BUNNY, ACTIVE. At four-thirty-two, my phone buzzes. Unknown Number: Dr. Beecham, this is Sam Garrett. Eli is writing the apology. He wants to know if "sorry for creating a casserole" is disrespectful or evidence that he listened. I look at the message for a long time. Long enough that the screen goes dark. Then I type: Holly: Evidence that he listened. But maybe add one sentence without food. The reply comes almost immediately. Sam Garrett: Good. I was worried about cream soup liability. I laugh. Out loud. In my office. Gordon witnesses it and says nothing because he is a fern with discretion. At five, I lock up. The square is warm in the late sun. Whitlock's Hardware has September snow shovels in the window because the twins believe in readiness and overordered in 2021. Brenner's still has customers at the counter. Maggie's shop windows glow pink and green with buckets of mums. Then I turn toward my door and see the man on my front step. He is young, maybe twenty-five, in rolled-up sleeves and a tie too narrow for his shoulders. He holds a small recorder in one hand and a spiral notebook in the other. Behind him, across the square, Bunny Sutherland stands beside the courthouse planter in a pale yellow cardigan, watering a bed of marigolds that died last week. She lifts the watering can. Smiles. The man clears his throat. "Dr. Beecham? Trevor Hale, Cardinal Sentinel. I was wondering if you had a comment on rumored inappropriate conduct with minors at a Main Street business." The watering can tips. Water darkens the soil around the dead marigolds. I look at the recorder in his hand and think, with absolute professional clarity, that rumors really are casseroles.
